Re-writing PHP to work on-the-fly

After reading all of the SO questions related to MySQLi prepared statements and what not, I’m still left wondering if this can be done using the mysqli library directly or if I would have to roll my own function that would just connect and then run a query, and disconnect.
Basically, the application I’m working on has a client that connects to a MySQL server over the internet and logs changes, where sometimes they’ll receive updates while their connection is down.
The idea I had was to have a PHP function like this:
function getUpdates( &$db) {

$query = $db->query(“SELECT * FROM `whatever`”);
while($update = mysql_fetch_assoc($query)) {
$db->query(“UPDATE `whatever` SET `whatever` = ‘$update’ WHERE `whatever` = ‘whatever’;”);

And if that query takes a while to execute, it will return nothing and return false after. This would make sense, but I’d rather it close right away and not keep my connection open if that makes sense.
Does that sound possible? Is there a better way to do this that I’m not thinking of? Thanks.

Sounds fine to me.
